Mattias De Backer is a postdoctoral researcher at KU Leuven and the Université de Liège travelling between criminology, sociology and geography. He holds a Master in Philosophy (UGent) and Urban Studies (VUB), and a PhD in Criminology (VUB). Since 2019 he is a postdoctoral researcher in the HERA-funded international research project on Everyday Experiences of Young Refugees and Asylum-seekers in Public Space. Mattias works mainly in the fields of cultural and spatial criminology, urban studies and social geography and is interested in topics such as public space, urban youth, deviance, social control, migration and diversity, gender and intersectionality, street harassment and sexual violence, radicalization and polarization, and is passionate about voicing vulnerable social groups through participatory research.

Mattias is editor-in-chief of the open-access journal Criminological Encounters, has published the edited collection Order and Conflict in Public Space with Routledge and articles in, amongst others, Space and Culture, Social and Cultural Geography, Emotion, Society and Space and Urban Environment.
