Founded in 1995, the Centre for Ethnic and Migration Studies (CEDEM) is a research centre at the Institute for Social Science Research based at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Liège (Belgium).

With its dynamic and international team of scholars, CEDEM’s mission is to conduct empirically and theoretically grounded research on migration, ethnic relations and racism from a multidisciplinary perspective. Over the years, CEDEM has developed expertise on the following themes: contemporary migration trends, socio-political mobilisation of migrants, migration policy, migration and the arts, social cohesion, transnationalism, citizenship, and Islam in Europe. CEDEM and its researchers have been awarded numerous research and fellowship grants from organisations such as the Belgian National Science Foundation (FRS-FNRS), the Belgian Science Policy (Belspo), Perspective Brussels, the European Commission, the European Research Council, the Council of Europe, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), etc.

In addition to its research, a key function of CEDEM is to organise and inform debates with academics, policymakers, stakeholders and the general public on major contemporary topics related to ethnicity and migration in the Belgian, European and global contexts. Accordingly, the centre regularly organises conferences, workshops and academic seminars. CEDEM is also a founding member of the research network International Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion (IMISCOE), Europe’s largest network of scholars in the area of migration and integration, and member of other research networks with international scope.
