The Centre for Ethnic and Migration Studies (CEDEM) of the University of Liège will host the 2026 IMISCOE Spring Conference in Liège between 16-18 March 2026. The conference theme will be "Governing and Experiencing Migration in Contentious Times".

Since its creation in 1995, CEDEM has established itself as a key actor in migration research in Belgium and internationally. Integrated within the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Liège, CEDEM has played a major role in structuring and advancing the academic recognition of this field in Europe and beyond. The fact that CEDEM coordinates today the IMISCOE research network further strenghtens this role and places ULiège at the heart of international scientific dialogue on migration research.

Research at CEDEM is structured around three complementary axes: institutions and migration governance; the roles and mobilization of actors within migration processes; and area studies with a particular focus on the Mediterranean and Islam. Our multidisciplinary team—including among others sociologists, anthropologists, political scientists and economists—works closely with local, national, and international partners, producing knowledge that is empirically grounded, socially relevant, and globally connected. CEDEM is committed to critical, evidence-based research that highlights social inequalities and power dynamics, while engaging with the civil society.

We are thrilled to host scholars, practitioners, and students from around the world, and we look forward to fruitful exchanges and inspiring discussions.

Welcome to Liège, and enjoy your time at the 2026 IMISCOE Spring Conference!
